Atelier Sottomuro
Atelier Sottomuro is a gallery in the Old Town beneath the Porto di Sottomuro, literally
meaning ‘under the wall’. It is owned by Jan Ejsymontt who has lived and
worked in Rovinj for the last three years. Rovinj has always attracted artists and there
is a constantly growing colony of painters and art lovers who are fascinated by
the beauty of Rovinj, including Jan. ‘I fell in love with Rovinj the moment I visited this magical town. I have always dreamt of living by the sea and am constantly enthralled by the sheer beauty and power of the Istrian bay. The picturesque fishing harbour holds a wealth of subjects for drawing, and the Old Town with its shuttered windows, labyrinthine cobbled streets and rows of hanging washing, begs to be painted. The rocky coves and pine forest that surround Rovinj, along with the nearby islands and beautiful hinterland, are also a great source of calm inspiration.’ Jan’s
own work is mainly abstract, but in her gallery she also shows the work of
several other artists who have a mix of eclectic styles and who work in a variety
of mediums. She also produces a range of beautiful jewellery using
semi-precious stones, Murano glass and silver and regularly shows this
collection in London at the Business Design Centre. Jan is a member of Uliks, an established artist’s
association based in Pula, a city south of Rovinj and regularly exhibits with
it. Jan works with a number of well respected Istrian artists, who will act as tutor on your holiday.
